In fact, the World Federation of Advertisers recently revealed that 82% of CMOs and policy leads say their budgets face heavier examination than just a year ago.

That puts pressure on everyone to deliver return-on-investment. And for those of us in events and experiences, those three little letters—ROI—can feel huge.

Unlike digital campaigns, where clicks and conversions are right there in the dashboard, events (particularly in B2B and B2E) can be harder to quantify. No clicks to track; often, no immediate sales. And yet, proving a return is increasingly non-negotiable. In our own research, 98% of event leaders said ROI is a critical factor in assessing success.

Events are high-stakes investments. When a business commits, it needs to see meaningful outcomes. So the question is, how do we measure, evaluate, and demonstrate their true ROI?

Redefining ROI

Traditional reporting often focuses on surface-level metrics, like attendance, badge scans, content downloads. Useful, but they rarely tell the full story or demonstrate long-term impact.

Take any major concert tour. Ticket sales are easy to report. But what about the collective energy of thousands experiencing something together? An emotional connection that deepens loyalty and turns an artist into a movement? Much harder to measure, but infinitely more powerful.

That’s the space we need to play in.

Forget what you know about traditional ROI metrics. We define ROI not just as what people do during or right after the event, but as what they remember and how they behave long after. For us, that’s the magic combo: memory and behavior.

We want attendees to leave with key messages etched in their brains. We want to see behavior shifts: people trying a new feature, advocating for the brand, re-engaging with the sales team—or, for internal events, reinforcing cultural change.

So before asking “what data can we track?”, we ask, “what do you want people to remember, and what do you want them to do as a result?” Then, we look at how to demonstrate that.

By reframing ROI in terms of memory and behavior, we can connect event strategy directly to business impact and design experiences that deliver it.

Success starts at the beginning

With that in mind, delivering ROI starts with defining success from the outset. What are those desired memories and behaviors? Goals can vary even down to a team level.

Often, the knee-jerk response is to say, “more sales” or “higher attendance.” But dig deeper, and the objectives usually become more nuanced. Maybe your business wants to engage a particular audience or shift perceptions of a product. Event objectives should hook into these wider business outcomes.

Interrogating these goals early, before creative development begins, makes it far easier to build a framework tied to real ROI, not vanity metrics. Those objectives then become a reference point throughout delivery, helping teams navigate shifting priorities.

That level of clarity needs more than an email. It takes a proper conversation. One that invites open thinking, challenges assumptions, and involves all key stakeholders. For us, it’s less about offering a set menu of metrics, and more about asking: what do you actually want for dinner?

Making it measurable

Once objectives are set, build a plan to track progress in the short and long term. The good news is the data you need likely already exists within your business.

Hook into existing measurement platforms to track ROI as far as a year post-event. If your goal was lead generation, tools like Salesforce and Hubspot can provide visibility. For internal initiatives, tools like Culture Amp or Officevibe can measure employee sentiment and behavior change over time.

The point isn’t to abandon traditional metrics, but to put them in context. Attendance and engagement figures are far more powerful when linked to strategic goals. Measurement should go beyond reporting what happened and instead evaluate how the event influenced the emotional and behavioral outcomes that matter.

The ROI mindset

ROI isn’t something to retrofit. It’s a mindset, embedded from the outset and carried through planning, delivery, and evaluation.

That requires space for strategic conversations early on. It calls for openness, collaboration, and better questions—not just “what are we doing,” but “why does it matter?”

With that thinking in place, events become more than standalone moments. They become tools for transformation, designed to shift thinking, change behavior, and deliver measurable value over time.

Author:
Adam Stanley, Managing Director

Marketing budgets are under more scrutiny than ever.
